Poole Convent for Demolition? |
An HISTORIC Poole convent is still facing demolition after it was sold on to a new developer. St Joseph’s, on the corner of Parkstone Road and Churchfield Road, had been due to be replaced with a seven-storey block of 52 flats after planning permission was granted in November 2008 – despite protests from locals and calls for the building to be listed. The work never went ahead and the convent is still home to a few remaining nuns, has continued to operate in the same way. Mc#Arthy andStone south Weswt plans to submit plans later this year for 50 assisted living apartments for the over 70s with services including a restaurant, personal care and domestic assistance.
The convent is thought to have been built between 1860 and 1876but the deeds to the convent were destroyed during the war. Originally a private house, it became a convent in 1925, and has been home to its nuns ever since.
